Interview With the Vampire
by Anne Rice (1976)

The first of the Vampire Chronicles, on losing her young daughter to leukaemia Rice expanded an early short story into this novel. Readers are treated to the vampire's point of view as Louis tells his story to an interviewer. The central figure is the vampire Lestat, who pretty well worries about all the things normal people do. The 1994 hit film propelled the book back onto the bestseller lists.

If you liked Angels and Demons, you will probably enjoy Brown's Da Vinci Code as well... I liked Angels and Demons better, but most people disagree of course.

Anyway, you could try "The Mists of Avalon", by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It's a story focused on King Arthur's legend, but told from his sister's point of view, Morgan Le Fay. Pure fantasy.

Oh, and one that shares the style of Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code is "The name of the rose", by Umberto Eco, you will simply love this novel, it's really good.

I hated Maximum Ride. It's very boring. But some non-fantasy books are the Sharon Draper series, and one non Draper series book, Copper Sun. Also, Guns, Germs, and Steel is a good book.
Oh, and The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, or East, by Edith Pattou.

I have answered this question so many times, I decided to dedicate a web site to answer this question. Here it is:

http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com

Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book along with a brief summary of adult content. There is also a "Readers' Choice" list of favorite books, and a list of heroine sorcery fantasy books.

I hope this helps.

James Patterson has a series about children who are 80% human and 20% birds called "Maximum Ride". I have read one of them and even though I don't really like fantasy, this was a good book. I read the middle one. He has three so far.
