Me and my boyfriend of two years have come across this topic of celibacy and i told him you can have a history of being sexually active, but then you choose to wait til marriage to be sexually active again. He thinks celibate means no sex ever until marriage.

Celibacy: 1. abstenation from sexual relations. 2. the state of being unmarried
Abstain: to refrain from volentarily.
Waiting till marriage is a choice. Celibacy can be for any certain period of time. If you wait 6 months, then you have been celebate for 6 months. The time period is up to the person choocing to be celebate. Sexual activity is irrelevant. If you, have then you have.

Celibate just means being sexually inactive. Celibacy and virginity often do go hand in hand but a person can be celibate if s/he chooses to. A person cant be a virgin after s/he has had sex. Marriage doesnt even have to be an issue. Some couples even have celibate marriages after they've had kids. Your boyfriend is probably thinking about Abstinancy where you abstain from sex until marriage, or atleast thats the usual way its given in all sex-ed classes.

Celibate means no sex. He is right. You can have a history of sexual activity, but choose to become celibate which in turn means NO SEX at all.

You can not become religiously celibate once you have started having sex, but you can at this point take a vow of chastity until you are married. Celibacy has a few definitions. Hope the link is helpful :)

Once you start having sex, it's very hard to stop and become celibate. Because you realize how pleasureful it is and don't want to stop.

Some people become celibate again after having sex for a variety of different reasons.

Buy him a dictionary.

A VIRGIN is someone who has never had sex.

A CELIBATE is someone who is sexually experienced who chooses not to have sex (whether temporarily or permanently).

Neither has anything to do with being married or not. Some people have sex while single; some wait until marriage, and some become celibate after marriage (usually due to health issues).

The dictionary defines it as

1. an unmarried person, esp. one under a vow to remain unmarried
2. one who abstains from sexual intercourse

You can never be a virgin again, but you can be celibate whenever you wish to do so.

Yes. To be celibate, you just abstain from sexual activity for a period of time. That period could be a few months or your lifetime.
