how did the tradition of giving presents during christmas time start?

supposedly it began with the gifts of the magi to the baby jesus....but actually gifts were not commonly given at Christmas until well after the dark ages, and even then only by the very wealthy. Wasn't until the middle 1800s that it became more common.

It supposedly originated from the festival of Saturn, a Roman gift giving holiday in December. Gift giving became popular in Victorian England and was promoted even more by dept. stores in the US in the 1950s to present day.
