You're supposed to clean it pretty much every week! Why are you letting it get that dirty????

You need a water heater in the tank....it should be around 80 degrees or so.

So.....go clean the tank!!! A water turtle is a lot of work.

Read a book about turtles! And it would tell you what temps to maintain, Which are between 75-85 degrees, and as far as cleaning it once a month, how do you stand the smell? Turtles are very dirty animals and should be cleaned every other day if in a small tank with no filter, which if you had one the water would circulate and not turn your tank green. Why do people buy pets and not know the first thing about them? I bet you know all about your cell phone or video games though huh? You should know more about your turtle than you do your cell phone, its a living thing not just something you use. I'm sorry but it really irks me when people buy animals without doing the research FIRST. And then they want to rely on other peoples advice who may or may not know what they are talking about. The time you took to ask this question would have been better spent looking up a website with the information you need...

Based on sheer odds, it is a Red-ear Slider. If you want to keep the little guy happy and healthy, it will need three things.

1. Good water- LOTS of water (aim for at least 10 gallons per inch of shell length), kept nice and warm (75-80F) with a good water heater, and kept very clean with a strong external filter.

2. Good sun- Safe and easy to climb on basking sites that are warmed to about 90F. Lighting should illuminate the tank nicely but still allow shadows for hiding. UVB lighting is helpful.

3. Good food- try a mix of 1/2 good pellets and 1/2 live or frozen/thawed fish food (worms, insects, krill, shrimp, beef heart, etc.)

the water should be clean everyday. and have a 75% water change every two weeks or month. if it stays greener, then the filter that your using isn't working well. if you keep having the water green, your turtle may get sick. the water temperature has to be about 75-80 degrees. get a good filter. i think you can get one for $20 at the fish store, depending on how many gallons your using. the better filter for your turtles, the better they would not get sick. hope this helps.

i got two red ear slider and it takes a lot of work to clean it.I think it should be a little bit warm because turtles are reptiles and they are cold blooded animals so i think it should be a little warm.
