Your bump may 'drop' - change shape as baby gets head down and engaged. You may be able to breathe better as a consequence, as less pressure on your diaphragm.
As cervix softens and dilates - the mucus plug is sometimes passed up to week in advance (or as little as a couple of hours).
It's called a 'show' and looks like spotting or can be jelly-like.
Some people in early labour get back-ache as a sign.
The contractions also feel like period pains. (It could be Braxton Hick's practise contractions instead, though). They are likely to increase in number and strength during labour but don't worry - a bad pain doesn't mean the next one will be worse.
Sorry to say it - but constipation is a problem in late pregnancy - but some women may find their bowels move easily in early labour to avoid pushing anything else out with the baby.
Good luck - if giraffes can do it - so can we - and go for the birthing pool if it's on offer - it makes sense as you'd go for a hot bath if you had sore muscles.

The best way to tell if its time is going by the due date your doctor gave you. If this is your first born, then expect to be up to two weeks before or two weeks after the due date.
Closer to the due date, you may sleep more or become more irritable, your belly may push downward because the baby had turned. Up to a week before you're due, you may begin to loose the mucus plug and your water may break. Sometimes, it does not, and you'll just get the contractions that are regular, frequent and strong, and they do not stop.

If you are attuned to how your body has been feeling you might notice slight changes when the baby's head starts to engage. People will say you have dropped. Then you will feel more pressure on your bladder and cervix. Some people get the urge to clean house. Seriously. The week before my last baby was born I went out in the yard and trimmed all the bushes. Weird stuff like that.

I had no indications. My water broke in my doctors waiting room, and contractions followed 20 minutes later. My labor was only 2 hours, very fast.

The only thing I can tell you is that you will know. Trust your instinct. Something will be off and you will just know. It could be like a different kind of back pain, a different kind of contraction...your body will let you know.

Sometimes you'll get a spurt of energy. Usually the mucus plug comes out. I felt just like I was getting my period--cramps and all.
