i have a ibm with duel 256 ram in it. do i want to put 512 ram in it. do i need to 512 sticks ram or one.

You usually have only 2 SODIMM slots in a laptop. 512mb + 256mb would work but 2x512mb is great.

It doesn't matter. If you can put One 512 in thats fine. Just make sure your machine can take that much. Then you would have TWO 256 RAM chips and ONE 512 for a total of 1GB of RAM?
