Women can gain weight while on the pill such as Yaz but each person is different. When I did the sister product to Yaz: Yasmin I lost nearly 10 lbs in the 6 months I was on it.

The weight gain that is occurring is because of mostly water which is caused by the hormones in the medication.

As for other brands of pills out there there's Alesse, Desogen, Femcon, Loestrin 24, Loestrin 30, Mircette just to name a few more.

You may or may not gain weight on the contraceptive pill- there is no way of knowing before hand. Yaz was initially marketed as a great pill for preventing weight gain because it contains a slight diuretic, but they were forced to withdraw that statement because it was shown to be no more effective than other pills. In reality as many women lose weight as gain weight on the pill and the majority of people who do gain weight only gain a couple of pounds.

The majority of weight gain as well on the pill is due to changes in appetite- which some people have and some people don't. So if you start feeling more hungry, it may be due to the pill, but you don't have to act on it.

You may find there are some side effects from Yaz at the start that you don't like (80% of people get breakthrough bleeding in the first month, but it has gone for most people by the third month) but it is worth persisting for three months because most disappear. But if you still don't like it, there are lots of different formulations of the combined pill (like Yaz) as well as progesterone only pills, injections, implants and interuterine devices, as well as a variety of barrier methods to prevent pregnancy and STIs. So don't worry if you don't like Yaz, there are lots of other choices.
