I currently have 2 goldfish. They live in a tank, with no heater, they have a pump, filter... I want guppies. Why cant I put them in there. I know goldfish are coldwater and guppies are freshwater, but what is the difference between the water. could it kill the guppies, would they be happy...? if they could live, what would their life be like and how long would they live for like that?

You can out a couple of guppies in there but you would need to make sure that the tank was big enough for all the fish as they would be competing for oxygen. They would live quite happily with the goldfish.

Guppies are tropical, not freshwater and need warm water to live in, controlled by a heater. You cant keep goldfish in a (tropical) warm water tank. They are completely different species and come from different areas of the world. Go to the libray and get some books to read on the different types of fish and what their requirements are, or find some websites. Your guppies will die in a coldwater tank and vice versa with the goldfish.

Jordan, coldwater and tropical (both of which are freshwater) fish need completely different temperatures. The maximum temperature for fancies is 22*C. That's too cold for tropical - who need a lowest temperature of 23*C. Keeping the goldfish in water warmer than they can tolerate will speed up their lifecycle. Keeping guppies in water too cold for them will kill them.

Not only that, but goldfish WILL grow to large for guppies and they WILL eat them once the guppies are big enough to fit in their mouths.

You know what I would do? I'd get a 30 gallon tank for the goldies, and put some guppies in the 30 (?) ltr tank you have the goldies in atm. No one's saying you can't have guppies - just not in the same tank as the goldfish.

Well goldfish are coldwater and do better in coldwater.

Guppies are tropical fish, which need a heater and a tank temp. around 78 F.

You could put them together, but with the warmer water the goldfish are going to suffer. Dont add a heater, then the guppies will die. Also you have to worry about because guppies are so small, them gettting eaten.

Tank size? Goldfish are huge waste producers and need at least 25 gallons for one, and then 10 gallons for every one after that. With poor water quality the guppies wouldn't do well at all. Do you test your water? If not, you need to!

Just go to wal mart and get a 10 gal aquarium for $10 bucks, set it up and cycle it, then add the guppies to that.

They are both freshwater, but guppies are tropical and require a heater. If you tank stayed warm enough for guppies do to room temperature and you goldfish were used to it being warm, you could technically get guppies but you must remember that goldfish produce a lot more waste than most fish and require 2-3 gallons of water per inch of goldfish and they get anywhere from 6-12 inches! So unless the temperature stays warm anyways and you have a large tank, (over 60 gallons), I do NOT recommend that.

Guppies are tropical fish.
they need warm water so you would need a heater.. if you slowy heat up the water over a few days the goldfish should be okay.

you cant have anything else in there unless you have a tank bigger than 40g. the goldfish need 20 gallons per fish, and thats if they have very heavy filtration
