I live in west virginia and so far its been a mild winter, today was 49 degrees. does mowing the do it harm?

Nope....live in S. Texas. We have to cut grass almost 10 months out of the year. However, right now, it's dead!

Don't mow.

The taller the grass the more protection it gives the roots by holding in soil moisture and preventing winter kill. The blades of grass are still working, supporting the root system. Removing the grass is like taking away your blanket just because it's nice out now, doesn't mean it wont become winter tomorrow.

If your grass is still green, never step on it when the temps are under 32 F, or when you see frost or ice on the blades. Other than that, you can mow grass any time of the year with no harm done.
