They could have shot it with tranquilizers instead of killing it. I am sure someone must have left the gate open or some stupid person must have been playing a prank. The animals always lose because of the stupidity of humans.

I think you are speculating about it being abused before - there is no evidence of that being the case. The previous attack was terrible but the zoo made a decision to keep the tiger based on the circumstances - and they changed their handling procedures. And since we don't really know what exactly happened yet, we don't really know if it was a good decision or not. Tigers are dangerous wild animals and could attack a human at any time. That's why precautions are taken when handling them.
I wonder where all the people on Y Answers who have asked in the past why they can't have a pet tiger are today?
Worldneverchanges - Tranquilizers take several minutes to work. When people are in imminent danger, killing the animal is the only choice.

It is law- the tiger (or any dangerous zoo animal) gets shot with the entention of killing when they escape. Any tranquilizers in an animal that big (and very full of adrenaline because of the escape) take too long to work- they could kill a lot of other people before the tranq's work. If the animal was still semi-contained, they may try to tranq it, but if it was loose- they need to shoot it.
Also- the tiger probably wasn't abused- tigers are vicious animals- at 10 days old, they already have teeth and are biting, eyes still closed (my fingers have gotten bit at that age). Only professionals deal with baby tigers, and very very few people (who usually are lucky and always know what they are doing) deal with adult tigers without any fences between them. They are unpredictable, and just like all cats, kill for fun. Most likely, the people were either taunting the tiger or decided to run- any big cat can not turn down a running animal- it kicks in the predator response.
The tigers at our zoo were bottle fed, and raised in the house of one of the keepers. They will rub against the fence and purr for you....but then try to swipe you with a paw the second after.

No, it should not have already been put down. Tigers are predators and as the zoo keeper said at the time it attacked the feeder, "It was only doing what tigers do." AND that was at a feeding time. The boys were taunting the tiger- that is EXACTLY what a tiger does in that situation for sure. You can't "love love love tigers" as you say and not respect them for what they are- carnivores. We are just a meal to them- as God intended. That is a natural instinct to them. It in no way means the lion was mean or doing anything wrong. Ignorant humans cage them and expect them to behave like house cats. Worse actually I guess, as even some sick humans dump their cats or otherwise get rid of them when they mark their territory on the carpet. The schools need to be educating kids on ALL animals, wild and domestic.

I'm all for tranquilizers, but the tiger was in the process of attacking the sitting person again and then moving towards the police, so they had to shoot.
This is extremely rare, they don't know how it got out (15' should have been enough of a distance to keep the tiger in) and while I don't like the outcome, I can't see how they could have done anything different without having more people hurt.

no i dont' think it should have been put down. i think that proper precuations should have been followed and that the enclosure should have been inspected and maybe they could have fixed the problem. i am against killing any animals. i think that the animal is just going on it's wild instincts and that it is probably a human's fault in this case. but still accidents happen and we shouldn't kill the animal for acting as it would in the wild.

killing it was the last thing they wanted to do, but it started to attack a police officer.
