If you spell the word "gypsy" you can look it up in Wiki at the link below or 'Google' it. Or Wiktionary.

http://www.wikipedia.org

Just put your word, gypsy, in the search box.
I will too, just to check.

EDIT: oh, hey-- and I see that you can spell it "gipsy," so --my apologies.
I would further explore the Romani people, as they seem to be the most numerous (and they aren't all that numerous) and the people most depicted in novels and films.

"Gipsy" is an old-fashioned spelling of the word "gypsy," which is the common name for the Romani people. The Romania people, or Roma, are an ethnic group, probably originating in India, with communities spread all over the world. Historically, many Roma were nomads, though this may have been due to the extreme persecution they faced, especially throughout Europe. Though most of the Roma are Christian, they were stereotyped as sorcerers, as well as being idle, debauched thieves. Today, the Roma are still associated with mystical powers, especially fortune telling.

"Gipsy" is a variant of "Gypsy", which actually has a couple of different meanings. The "gypsy" you are wondering about might mean "traveler" or "nomad," and could refer to any character who has these traits. Otherwise, "Gypsy" generally means a particular group of people, such as the Romanies. Check out Wikipedia for more info if you are really interested.

there's a lot of gypsies around the world, even in the u.s. the 'originals' might have been those who came from Romania, but there are so many varieties now, who knows? they were/are known for traveling, being connected to circuses, being poor, sometimes people are scared of them and think that they are thieves. in the old days they thought they stole your children. there are i'm sure big differences between mythical gypsies and real ones.
