I agree with Tawn. Monty is a cute name. I have a cousin named Monty.

There was a British film a while ago called "The Full Monty" (where the title referred to complete male nudity). Some people might make that association when they hear his name, but it shouldn't be a big deal.

If you like the name Montreal, then name him that. His nickname can be whatever you wish, but if people call him Monty, that's a fine name, too.

I'm not sure I understand your longing to name your son Montreal, but with little girls out there called Savannah, I suppose it's a reasonable choice.

Trouble is that the first nickname you propose - Ale - is the equivalent of naming your child Beer. It's a non-subtle alcoholic reference. I wouldn't go there.

Real is also a bit much. It has a nice meaning, and with noun names like Journey, Story and Ever in use, it isn't a far stretch. But Real seems open to too many jokes - the real thing, the real deal, the real macoy.

Monty is the likely nickname you'll find used. It isn't offensive, just ... geeky. It's a name for an old man, and while Silas and Miles might be back, Monty simply isn't. Plus, there's three card monty - a card game - and The Full Monty - where "the full monty" meant to strip naked. So if it isn't just hopelessly outdated, it's a little unsavory.

If your heart is set on Montreal, you might nickname him Tre or Trey. Or simply reconsider - there are so many great names out there, that surely you can find one you love that is less problematic.

That name is fine. Call him what nickname you want and he will tell his friends that nickname. Just because someone calls him Monty, he doesn't have to go by that name.
Monty also isn't that bad or that offensive. I actually had a friend named Monty.
I think you are hearing that because of the term 'Full Monty' which means a male striper showing all his 'goods'.

Montreal is an excellent name.......if YOU start calling him Real or Ale, than that will eventually stick, but there is nothing wrong with Monty either. I think the name is original, and bold, without being too weird. go for it!

* as a fellow Canadian, please use your spell check, I am assuming french is your first language, but spell check is still your friend!

Okay...I'm from Canada (Ontario). Please don't call him Montreal. That sounds silly. Monty is not an offensive name, but it's not a great name either. Give him something nicer than that. What about Matthieu or Sébastien. These are nice names.

He'll definately get called Monty (thats an animal name)! How about calling him Australia instead - then he'll get called Aussie

That sure is an ugly name. I'm surprised a person with Italian heritage couldn't find anything better.
