I am a long distance runner and want to find a primary care physician in Portland Oregon who is familiar with common injuries, and specific health care needs of runners. Also, my husband and I are thinking about having children and I need to find a doctor who is knowledgeable about pregnancy and exercise, preferably someone with personal experience with both running and motherhood.

Kara Kassay in Lake Oswego comes highly recommended. My husband saw her today. He has been training for a 50k and injured his foot. She is a general practitioner as well as a competitive speed runner. I am also seeing her for my annual "well woman" visit... so,give her a try

Look for a doctor or clinic that specializes in sports medicine. While the same doctor/facility won't be your OB/GYN they should be able to recommend someone that will be sensitive to your needs as far as being a runner and wanting to stay in shape during and immediately following pregnancy. You also have to keep in mind that someone specializing in sports medicine probably won't see you for annual check-ups, non-sports related illness/injury, etc. But it would be a good place to start looking for recommendations for a general practitioner that understands an athlete's body and needs.

Ask around about doctors who deal with Sports Medicine. Sports Medicine doctors specialize in the needs of treating athletes. One of the doctors I had one time as my primary care doctor also specialized in Sports Medicine and he was very good to me.

Call the largest hospital in your area. And ask them who in their hospital is a specialist in this field. If you know a hart Dr there at this hospital.Call their office and leave this ? for their nurse and you should get the best answer. That is how I get my best info. The nurse will ask Dr and should get back to you.And you are going to need a good OB GYN,if you plan on being a mother.Good luck.
