I prefer to start with 60 grit, then move on up to 180 grit. The best stuff is the waterproof wet sandpaper, since there's a good chance your beer will spill from your glass while you do this.

'Course, I suppose you could have a friend do the sanding, so you wouldn't have to put your beer glass down. Yes, that would be the safest method...

How about a metal foot scrapper? Those work delightfully well. They are lightweight, hand held, and convenient.
