I have a Sony Vaio laptop and I am having trouble connecting to my 2wire modem. My laptop gets full signal from the modem but my laptop "has not been assigned a network address". Even if I hook up the ethernet cable from the modem to the laptop I still cannot connect to the internet. What can I do?

Check your firewall settings, your computer might be blocking the incoming connection.

There are too many things that can go wrong so answering your question is virtually impossible

Do you have a LAN IP address provided from the router? (Open command prompt by clicking start, run - type in cmd and hit enter; then type in ipconfig at the prompt; you should see an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway ip address, probably in the format 192.168.x.y where x is 0 or 1 and y runs from 2 - 254. If you have an IP address that starts with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx you do not have a valid IP address and you are not getting admitted to the network. Review the config of the modem / router and your LAN connection.)

If you have a valid LAN IP address, type into command prompt "ping " and hit enter; where is the ip address of the default gateway, (e.g. ping 192.168.1.1). You should see 4 successful ping replies; if you do not receive any ping responses there is a configuration problem with the router - review this further with the manual.

If the ping is successful, then in command prompt type in ping 4.2.2.2 and hit enter; if this is not successful, reconfigure the WAN port of the modem / router.

Next in command prompt type in ping yahoo.com and hit enter; if this is not successful, reconfigure the DNS settings of the modem / router.

If all are successful and you cannot get a web page on the browser, you have a firewall blocking things OR you have something wrong with the browser.

Try the above; report back on what you found and more help can be provided if needed.
