what is the point to having a hymen? why is it there? it hurts like hell having it removed lol

in a female the hymen is vestigial, in other words it is the tissue that would have formed into skin had you turned out to be a guy instead of a girl.

That's a good question. From what I have studied, it seems to be for protection while the female reproductive system develops.

I am guessing that prior to puberty it protects a girls female organs from any "contamination" for the lack of a better word.
