Isn't that part of the Christmas tradition? Having to spend time with people whom you say if it wasn't christmas, I wouldn't be anywhere near this freak show?
Don't break tradition!?!!!!!

Well, the bickering is only half the fun of having a family. If the bickering is like hardcore-in-your-face bickering, then I'd spend it alone. Not worth getting hurt during christmas.

I'd rather spend it with just my husband, which is what we should have done. The family dinner was a disaster, as the girlfriend of my FIL tells the whole extended family of how difficult it was to raise my husband in the past, which is only partial truth, because she was not there to witness everything that happened then. My husband had some upsetting events happening during his childhood, which he doesn't want to remember, and here she was, laying every episode of his life on the dinner table. You can imagine how hard it was to swallow the food, when everyone else around you is laughing at you like your childhood was a joke. The opening present session wasn't any better either. Imagine having to put on a fake smile while everyone exaggerate their expression while they got their gifts. Things will be different next year, for sure!

If it's my family. . . I wouldn't mind spending it with them. You don't see it now, but one day you'll miss that bickering. I've been down that road where I stayed away during the holidays because of the bickering and lost a loved one. The bickering is minor and you can always tune it out, but when they're gone. . . believe me you miss hearing their voice(s).

I'd probably put up with family for a little while, then spend it alone. But I'd rather spend it with friends.

Interestingly, you don't offer the alternative that most people aspire to.

That is, to try to get along with estranged family members, at least, for the short holiday period.

Not that most families SUCCEED in doing this; just that they aspire to it. Like the gifts; it's the thought that counts.

Even "Skywalker" is trying to think outside the box. It's a creepy little box, but, he's thinking outside it.

just spent this one alone. Dont get along with my family OR the in-laws. you kinda get used to it, its really not that bad, as long as you are good at entertaining yourself.
