Thanks in advance.

I have a sprint account that I CLOSED about 2 months ago. I have until Feb 2nd to pay off the balance of $784. That is what they wrote me a letter stating. NOW I call to pay $300 on the account and supposely it's $850! Because of late fees? IS THIS RIGHT? How can they be charging me late fees if the account is CLOSED?!

Because they are all crooks that lock you into shady contracts. Call them and try to work out a deal. They may work out a payment plan if you tell them you cannot afford to pay that much. If they are jerks, insisit that the debt is not valid, and tell them you will not pay the late fee because it is not valid. If it goes to collections, ask for a payoff amount, which will be considerably less.

Edit: And there is no way they would sue you for that amount of money. It would cost them $10,000 to make $800. Not going to happen.

They probably charged you a disconnect fee. I would call them to get them to explain the charges in total. They do have a right to charge you a late fee even though it is canceled. Sprint isn't exactly the easiest to deal with to begin with, I wasn't too pleased with the service they provided when I had them. Check the bill closely and make them explain EVERYTHING.

There is NO SUCH THING as a closed account if you still owe them money. Even if there was, The fact you own them means your payments ARE LATE. I have not seen the letter you have, but I bet Feb 2 is when they said they would SUE if you have not paid.
