there are so many, but i guess johannes guttenberg's printing press was very important because out of it, the bible came out which promoted religion, and of course many other pieces of literature that expand knowledge.

There are so many. As a previous responder said, movable type caused a revolutionary change in society (and some argue that communications technologies such as the radio-telegraph had nearly equal impact, and that the 'net is equally revolutionary today). But more mundane things come to mind. For example, the invention of the refrigerator has radically altered the way we live. So has the invention of distributed electricity. Mechanized farming means that less than 2% of the US population produces vastly more food than 40% did a century ago; mass transportation and refrigeration (again) means that we can buy produce grown thousands of miles away fresh at any time of the year. The invention of vaccines and antibiotics has also had an enormous impact on world society. So take your pick. I would probably say refrigeration, myself.

Maybe not an invention, but the "discovery" of how to make fire was certainly how humans were able to develop into a society. I would agree that the printing press would rank at the top as well.
