The Spengler Cup is an invitation only tournament. HC Davos runs the tournament under the auspices of the IIHF.

HC Davos contacts various national federations (usually Sweden, Russia, Germany, Czech Republic, Finland, and Hockey Canada) and asks them to send a representative team from their league (Canada sends a team made up of Canadians playing in Europe).

No minimum or maximum age requirement. With all due to respect to North Americans, this is the most watched and scouted tournament in the world (yes, there are more scouts here than at the World Juniors)
