I have a 6wks old little boy who I breastfed until he was 5wks. We put him on Similac Sensitive because he stayed gassy and fussy on the breast and the lactation specialist told me to go on the caveman diet and I can't do boiled chicken 24/7. For the first 4 days or so he was Great!!! But now he's fussy again and seems like he's not getting enough. He's eating 4oz every 1.5 to 2 hours. Doctor said to put rice in his bottle, which I don't have a problem with but I wanted to get some more advice. Thanks for your help.

Gassy & fussy babies happen. It may have had nothing to do with breastfeeding, though it's possible it's an allergy. But if it is, it's often to milk or soy which is in formula!!

Would you consider going back to the breast? Try with an IBCLC's help and/or LLL. Fussy at the breast could be any number of things. Please please consider getting trained breastfeeding help and see how that goes. You likely still have quite a lot of milk.

I wouldn't put rice cereal in his bottle. I'd try increasing his formula in a sitting. Make sure you are burping him really well. If it continues I would try enfamil's Nutramagin. It is expensive but definately worth it. My son had a really hard time with every single formula out there besides this one. Also if he is gassy you can get drops for baby to get rid of the gas in thier tummy.

What stephcarson said.

Was this a certified lactation consultant, or just some hospital nurse calling herself a lactation consultant?

Loads of babies are gassy and fussy. It's very rare that mum's diet has anything to do with it.

Some good reading:

Rice in the bottle is also a lousy idea.

*Please*, for the sake of your son's health, talk to a *real* lactation consultant/La Leche League.

I agree it does sound like he is not getting enough nourishment. This happened with my first grandson. My daughter put him on the Wal Mart equivilant to Nestle Carnation's Good Start, powder formula. he never looked back.

Make sure that you are giving him enough formula. At five weeks he may be ready for more than just 4 oz.

He could no longer be constipated. now and back bf infants substitute their bowel conduct, and would possibly no longer bypass stool for some days or greater. NO, do no longer provide him formula...which will make concerns worse! uncertain why you think of that this could help... provide it some greater days of nursing, and if he nevertheless does not have a stream, touch his healthcare expert. greater suitable than in all hazard, he's purely high-quality.

Well I brestfed my daughter until she was about 4 months and she had the same proplem. I would just put some baby cereal or rice in his formula. And he may need and extra feeding because out milk is more nutritous and filling to our baby's anyway.

Sounds like he is not getting enough food. Either increase the amount you are giving him or add substance with the cereral to the formula.

breastfeeding is the best thing you can do for your baby!! formula is so bad! most mothers microwave their baby's plastic bottles. plastic is bad enough but then putting it in the microwave is even worse! the microwave puts radiation into any food you put in it. please stop hurting your baby and breast feed!
