i'm having trouble with my CPU fan getting stuck, so far i'm hoping that it's just stuck and not a problem with the actually power connection on the motherboard itself. there anything i can use to get it moving again?

Buy a new fan. Look for a new one at http://www.newegg.com

Try to figure out what SOCKET that your CPU is plugged into. Then buy the fan for that CPU Socket type.

Let's say that you have a Pentium 4 with the old Socket 478.

Then I would get this one:
TR2TT TR2-M12 80mm Ball CPU Cooler - $23.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106606

but DO YOUR HOMEWORK and get the right Fan.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

In answer to your question, in most cases, yes, you can disassemble the fan from the heatsink, peel back the label over the bearing and put a drop of high quality machine oil (I use "Breakfree") directly into the bearing.

However, like others have advised, you might want to get a better fan (maybe one with ball bearings). It might be less troublesome, as the above oiling "fix" will, at best, only last as long as the fan did the first time through.

If it is sticking, it usually needs to be replaced. Most of them are pretty cheap and don't even have bearings, so the stick easily. Just get a new one and look for one with good bearings so it will last longer. Far cheaper in the long run to just replace it.

If you can't easily see some foreign object keeping the rotor from turning, its time to replace the fan altogether.
