We currently have two aging flowering crabs in the front yard that we plan to replace this spring. We are trying to decide whether it would be better to put in slower-growing shade trees or faster-growing ornamental trees. As we will be retiring within the next 18 months or so and selling the house, my question is which type of tree would be more appealing to prospective buyers. The only other trees on the property are an evergreen tree and a Bradford pear tree, both in the back yard.

Well does your house need shade? If you have been comfortable in your home with the Crab trees ( and I assume you don't receive much shade from them) then an ornamental would have broader curb appeal. Choose one that has lots of color like a plum or a beautiful flowering tree that grows well in your area, making sure it won't have a root system that is intrusive or sends out shoots.
Another way is to drive around and look at other homes. Which house fronts tend to attract you? Then ask the owners what type of tree they have.

since the flowering time is short i would suggest evergreens such as leyland cypress or cryptomeria
