I read somewhere that you have to be 17. Is this true? If so why?

Can anyone younger than 17 still give blood with permission of their parents/guardians?

I live in California, if age varies by state.

I believe as u just stated that it varies by state in my home state of New Jersey if I remember it is 16,u can donate blood.
As for can someone younger than what u described give blood younger than 17 with the permission of there parents,I do not believe so n if so it has to be a very extreme circumstance for that to happen.

previous posters are wrong about California.

The minimum age in California is 17; Most other states it is also 17, and in some states it is 16. below are links with details from The Red Cross:

most states require you to be 17 and weigh 110 lbs, as well as have no piercings or tattoos in the last 12 months. in situations where a family member needs blood, plasma or bone marrow, hospitals may allow an underage family member to donate with a parent/guardian consent.
