I have had five babies (going to have number 6 in March) and no doctor has ever slapped my babies and if one was stupid enough to do that I would slap them.

No most docs do not smack the butt anymore! That was used for many years to work when the baby wasnt crying immediately after birth. They need to cry to clear their lungs.
Most hospitals these days leave the baby in the room with the parents. Some have what is called Kangaroo Care where the baby stays on mom's chest for an hour after birth - to allow the mom and baby to bond.

no they dont slap the baby on the butt! if the baby doesnt start crying right away then they may pat it on the back to help clear the lungs but thats about it. and yes, as long as the baby is healthy they will let you see it right away but just for a few seconds then they will take it to do necessary tests and clean it up. when they are done then they will give it back.

They used to do it at every birth but now a days the don't most of the time. Both my kids were crying as soon as their mouth was clear and they were out of me. Also they put my babies up on my chest as they wiped them off and while my husband cut the umbilical cord. Then they took them right over to be weighed and measured and get the apgar score and get baby's bracelet and anklet medical bands on(all of that has to be done right after birth) oh and I think they do baby's foot prints right away too. Then they will swaddle baby back up and give him/her back to mommy.

Neither of my children were slapped when they were born, of course, they were also both screaming before fully exiting my body too. LOL I have never known anyone that has had their child slapped after birth. Even if they come out non responsive or sluggish the doc and nurses will normally just rub them vigorously to try and stimulate them.
I had both of my children laid directly on my chest immediately after they were born.

My first daughter was rushed off to the NICU since shewas so small, but my second was held upside down and had all the gunk sucked out of her mouth and nose. No help needed there, she started to scream as soon as her lungs were clear.
And a lot of times, whether baby is healthy or not, you don't get them right away if you give birth in a hospital. If you go to a midwife, you get your child right away, and you can even leave only hours after the birth if there are no complications. (Hospitals always need to run tests... blood count, stress, temperatures, etc.)

I have been in the room during three baby births. None were slapped on the butt. They usually start crying on their own with a little stimulation.

They usually stimulate the baby (if needed) by rubbing it with a blanket...they gave up smacking the baby's bottom or the bottom of the feet years ago when they realized the same thing could be accomplished by other means.
And yes, as long as there aren't any complications and it's not a c-section delivery, the baby is given to mom right after birth, normally...wrapped up in the blanket they used to towel him/her off with.

I know they used to do that to clear the baby's throat, but I don't know if they still do or not. I think now they just use the suckee thing...not sure what it's called.
Also, they take the baby away at first to clean it and measure/weigh it. Then assuming it's healthy and okay they let you hold it!
I'm pregnant with my first, so I could be wrong....sorry if I am.

They only "slap" the babies in the cartoons. When I had my daughter they immediately put her on my tummy so I could hold her and look at her and then they took her away to clean her up and brought her right back to me.
