It happens to everyone who loses someone dear.
My mother died on December 19, 2000, so every Christmas I think about her. And my partner lost his father just about six weeks ago, so this Christmas had some sadness for him.
What I've come to believe is that the departed wouldn't want us to grieve during a happy time, so I strive to retain joy at the holidays. And it gets a bit easier each year.

Why even ask (I say with sobs) I would have no energy after something like that?
Come and let me give you a huge, though I know it wont help a lot just remember we're here for you.
I haven't been in the Christmas mood lately but you have more of a reason for it.
HUGGLES!!!!!!

Yes of course...Christmas is not the same without my mom...but there is much to be thankful for, and much to enjoy even without her there. It is nice to have the holiday season to remind you of some of your favorite memories of said loved one...
