Umberto D. by Vittorio De Sica. Excellent film.

You might also want to check out Throne of Blood, Ran, and The Seven Samurai, Cinema Paradisio, Das Boot, Yojimbo, and Alphaville.

My suggestion for foreign films is to sample a little bit of several directors at a time....like a buffet.

When I first started getting into foreign films (I'm not anymore but I do love watching them anyway), I started off with Ingmar Bergman (who passed away a few months ago). Then, it was Luis Brunel, etc.

My advice is to start off with Ingmar Bergman. It's good stuff even if you aren't into the artsy-fartsy art house schtick.

An idea for a foreign film is mariagge between a muslim and hindu. Is it true that love conquers all.

Another idea is a father dealing with debt, and how it affects his family, especially since they are aristocrats. What will you do for your family?

AS FOR FILMS THEMSELVES!

Definately Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (subtitles)
Kohi Mil Gaya (subtitles)
Hum Sat Sat Hai (Subtitles)
Jadu (I didn't really like it) (Subtitles)

Pans Labyrynth was amazing!

Umm...i think that's it... there is another one with the actors Amitabh Buchan, Sharu Kahn, and Rhitik Roshan and all these other famous indian actors. The plot is when a father needs to live with his family, but his own sons and daughters won't take them...its really good, but you need subtitles!

If you want comedy definitely watch Dhamaal, or Dhol, or Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal!. For drama, watch Om Shanti Om. Try Jab We Met too. and Welcome.
These are all relatively new Hindi Movies. Try your local India Mart for the DVDs.

there is a logic behind the whole foreign thing- it give them the dual benefit of showing a different location then homeland and also the director always is able to get an actors chunk dates and complete attention if they go and shoot out on an outside location. this sometimes turns out to be more economical in the long run.
