This question gets asked so many times, I actually have my answer saved as a .txt file:
1. He knew gambling was against the rules, regardless if you're a player, manager, trainer, etc.
2. He STILL bet on games he was involved in, knowing if he was caught he would be ineligible to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
3. He was caught, and made the deal to sign the lifetime ban in exchange for baseball not releasing their findings (that he bet on baseball.)
4. He lied about it to EVERYONE else for 15 years, until he wanted to sell books.
People that don't know the situation well enough think he should be allowed in, people that have done some research on it realize he should NEVER he inducted.
EDIT: Let's not forget something, being a racist (or an alcoholic) wasn't/isn't against any baseball rules.
EDIT#2: Brett - Rose was manager of the Reds for parts of 6 seasons, he was player/manager for the first 3.

He admitted his fault 15 years after the offence took place and by admitting it, basically said that the public wasn't worthy enough for the truth until he could make some money from it.
He is banned from the HOF and since he KNEW that was the punishment (he was not the precident for the punishment) it meant the gambling to him was more important than the HOF.
So, I don't know why you think he should go in where obviously Pete himself doesn't want in (judging by his actions)
Also, on Ty Cobb, please remember that Cobb didn't choose to be a racist, that's how people in the south were raised. They were raised to hate.
In 200 years, people are going to say a similar thing "yes, but he was religious" and that's the same thing, people are raised to believe a certain way.
Small edit: when people refer to Rose's tenure as a manager only, I am not sure that happened often, wasn't he always a player-manager?
I don't think he was ever a manager when he wasn't on the roster. (I could be wrong, but I think the timing is right and it's naive to think that he only started gambling once he hung up his batting gloves.

He should go to the HoF, so should Bonds, so should Clemens.
Everyone makes mistakes, and there are people who have been less successful and done bad things too who are in. Being opposed to afican-americans is worse than steroid use or gambling IMO. You gotta look at what these people have done in the sport of baseball, and Rose is the all time hits leader. Guys like Bonds and Clemens still hold many records and could've still had HoF careers without them. But in general to answer your question, yes Pete Rose whould be a HoFer and baseball is embarrasing itself by keeping him out.

Gambling, of any kind, is the worst possible thing someone active in the game can do. It all gets back to the Black Sox scandal and the integrity of the game. Baseball is not wrestling where the outcome of the game is planed in advance and baseball survives on integrity. Rose knew that before he gambled and he accepted a life time band because of his actions. Case closed.

I think he deserves to be in the HOF but since he committed the cardinal sin of sports and bet on his game he won't make it into the Hall unless a Commissioner of baseball re-instates him and I don't see that happening in the near future.

He should be in the HoF...
...but he should still be banned from baseball for life. His crime should not be relative to the steroids.
He committed the ultimate (baseball) sin by betting. In very lockerroom in every stadium there is a sign that states that betting on baseball is prohibited and the punishment is banishment from baseball.
There is no qualifier that says it's acceptable if you bet on your own team.
There is no qualifier that says it's acceptable if you eventually admit to it.
There is no qualifier that says it's acceptable if other people do bad things, too.
Keep Rose out of baseball for life.

NO!
ABSOLUTELY NOT!
NEVER!
Not even as a paying customer.
Not even 100 years from now.
Anyone who thinks what pete rose did was ok is clearly NOT a "real" baseball fan.
Period. End Of Story.

Yes Pete Rose should be in the HoF because he admitted what he did and he apologized for it, if Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens make it to the HoF it would be a bigger disgrace to baseball, because they cheated the game, Pete Rose bet on his own team to win.

Absolutely not. With his gambling on baseball as Reds manager, he made decisions that furthered his immediate interest to the detriment of the long term interest of his team.

Why should this even be a question, no he didn't soemthing bad, that got him banned from baseball for life, and he should not be in baseball's Hall of Fame, but more like the Hall of Shame, that is if they had one. But I guess they are lucky that they don't.
