Okay, so i am sure u r well aware of the formula known as the pythagorean theorum.
A^2+B^2=C^2
A is the perpendicular, B is the base, and C is the hypotenuse.
As this is a right isosceles, that means that A=B, and thus, A^2=B^2. We can express this as x, as u did.
X^2+X^2=C^2
2(X^2)=C^2
2((12)^2)=C^2
2(144)=C^2
288=C^2
√(288)=C
C is approximately 16.97.

What side is x?
Isoceles = 2 same sides one different.

Then one angle is 90, the other two are 45 each to add up to 180.

If the hypothenus is the unknown, then x the two sides are 12 each, just use pythagoras

squrt(12^2 +12^2) = 16.97

If x is the hypothenus and you wanna know the two equal sides then 12^2 = A^2 +B^2, A and B are equal, therefore:

144 = 2A^2
A = 8.3333

Thats about it.

use the pythagorean theorem because it is a right triangle.
the pythagorean theorem is
a^+b^=c^(a and b are the side lengths and c is the hypotnuse)
if one side is 12 that means the other side is also 12 because it is isoscles.
since the pythagorean theorem says that a^+b^=c^, and the side lengths are a and b, that means 12^+12^=c^
12^+12^=288
but to make it fit the equasion, we have to square root the 288.
and the approximate square root of 288 is 16.97 so that means the approximate hypotnuse of this triangle is 16.97
hope i helped.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2
12^2 + 12^2 = c^2
144 + 144 = c^2
288 = c^2
c = square root of 288
c is slightly more than 16.97

let hypotenuse length = h
then h^2 = x^2 + x^2 = 2x^2
so h = x sqrt(2) = 12 * 1.4142
