Thanks for the info so far! Some points...

I am single mom, who adopted a child from a family member who could not raise her.
I have raised two children (22 & 23)
There is no child support for this little one.
I contacted the hospital / medical providers...they ignored me :0( Which I was shocked about.

Well when you get into a situation in which you do not have enough to cover your bills, you have to take care of things in order of need.
Food , then A place to live, then a means to be able to get to a job ( whether that is enough money for public transportation or your car ), then bills come after that.
Its all you can do.
Are you working? You may come to the point where you may have to postpone your school in order to provide for you and your child.
I wish you the best with it though.

Well on the contrary of everyone that has answered your question I gotta say the medical system worked in our case.My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer a few months ago and went to the public hospital for treatment. We were all very happy with the results and the treatment she has recieved.Everyone was very friendly, all were really willing to help her,to inform us.Whenever we get back there for a check up(she has been of the treatments for about half a year now) everyone is always really friendly, asking her how everything is going etc.Sure the waiting lines are sometimes long and yes,we also paid the usual fakelaki for the operation but that was only because my father wanted the chief of surgery to perform the operation on my mother(if he hadn't persisted on that man alone and another, less experienced doctor had done it we wouldn't have had to pay anything). She was also very happy with the treatment she got a few years back when she needed surgery for another problem,a lot of positive stories from my mom.i don't know if our case is the exception of the rule,I do know though that we have the best doctors in Europe maybe, okay the facilities aren't always the best, but I do think those people are trying and doing the best they can under the circumstances they have to work in.And you don't want to listen about the horror stories I've heard about the doctors in my other country(Netherlands). My mom who is dutch says that she will never go back to Holland for medical treatment no matter what's wrong with her and that she would prefer anyone of her loved ones being treated here instead of anywhere else...

Unless I'm mistaken, you are not qualifying for any type of government help because of probably holding a good paying, or decent paying job. So that's out of the question. Regarding those $31k in medical bills would not be paid by Medicaid or similar program, even when you do have a baby. Of course, I'm supposing this is your situation and you've already made inquiries in your city's agencies.

Regarding the MORTGAGE: If you do have equity in your home it might not be a bad idea to re-finance it, not to get any money out of it_wouldn't recommend so in such a disastrous real estate market at present!_but to LOWER your monthly payments. Remember how interest rates have gone down!!!

Shop around for the best mortgage company, and try and stay away from fraudalent ones. Those will be easy to spot, since they will not be too willing to give you copies of anything, are a bit sloppy and informal to say the least, and will probably insinuate something which will not look proper or legal to you.

Another choice to explore would be one of those companies that specialize in debt reduction. Again, SHOP AROUND and ask as many questions as you can!!! They have ads on TV, radio, paper, etc. And also look them up on YELLOW PAGES. Same for mortgage brokers.

If none of the above suits your particular case, BANKRUPTCY is the next choice. Of course go for the one where you do pay everyone in installments, which of course would be explained thoroughly to you by a bankruptcy attorney. ASK ALL QUESTIONS you can think of first!

Call your mortgage company and ask to set up a payment plan. Then call the people that you owe for the medical bills. Be up front with them and let them know you are going through a hard time. They may let you just pay a little bit every month until you pay off the balance.

Good luck and don't lose hope. They can't help you unless you are honest with them. They don't want to take your home. They will help you.

EDIT: I am shocked they are ignoring you too. Send a certified letter to their accounting or billing departments. That should get their attention, and it will prove that you are trying to work to pay the debt. Again, good luck!!

Calling your Mortgage company 1st...should be top priority. I work for a very large mortgage company, and they are there to help you. trust me it costs them more to foreclose on your home then try and work things out for you. 2nd...call for your medical bills....and as long as you send them something they will not report it to the credit bureaus if you work something out with them. I am truly sorry for your situation. I can understand where you are coming from...my daighter is a single parent, and I hear her woes all the time. but that is what parents are for. Another thing you could do...if you feel comfortable..is renting out a room or two. The xtra income will take a weight off your shoulders and let you get some much needed rest!

Good luck to you!

The plain truth is the medical people will have to wait. Set up a BASIC payment plan; in many states they have to take a buck a month if you just keep paying. Keep in mind at some point they can file a lien against the property and if you attempt to re-fi or sell you'll have to pay them then.

The MEDICAL people ignored you?

Screw them. Send them a buck a month and a letter telling them that is all you can afford while you sort out things.

Contact CCC (consumer's credit counseling) & they may be able to help you consolidate your bills) A bank or mortgage company may work with you if they know the problem up front not years down the road. They want their money & if you don't let them know what's going on, then they won't work with you. Is there no famly to help you out? I wish you all the best & I hope a good solution is near for you.

If you contact the places you have the medical bills sometimes they will lower the total amount due if you payoff all that is due now. However, pay them what you can. If you don't have the amount they are asking for then pay them what you can as long as you continue to pay on it. Just let them know you will pay on it each month. Good luck.
