The paper monet currently in use in all countries has no real value other than the paper & ink it is made from.
Governments have to pass laws making it "legal tender", otherwise nobody would accept it.
This paper money is unconstitutional in the US by the way. The Constitution specifically says that a US dollar is to be a certain weight of pure silver (and that DOES have value all its own).
I would not say it is the root of all evil, but the Federal Reserve and the way it can create this so-called "money from nothing" IS evil. So is the GREED shown by corporations in exploiting workers and offshoring jobs to India.

The love of money is the root of all evil.
The money today is worthless, -other than the confidence we place on it.
Back before that, - folks would take a "precious" commodity (silver / gold / sheep?) and use that as currency. The problem with that, - if a lot of sheep die because of disease, - then you'll have deflation.
And if you own land, and you have silver on it, - then trading in gold helps you less.
If you're unhappy, either money or sheep will make you just as unhappy. But you'll have shallow friends attracted to you, - to share your unhappiness.

money is meant for buying power not happiness. If happiness is what you want then money can rent it.
