Would you agree that out of all the artistic and physical competitions that humans take part in, the 50 (or 100) metres sprint is the one where it is likely that the best man or woman on the day takes the first prize.

Please note that I have used the word "likely" here i.e. the chances are he/she will be the best on the day because this is the event where things are least likely to go wrong, and are not subject to anybody's opinion.

This question is more about accuracy and fairness of a match, whereby it asserts that it is least likely for thing to go wrong. That the instantaneous nature of the event leaves the minimum possible variables, things that needs to be taken into account while performing and also while making a decision. It is, for instance, a matter a very careful and consistent observation by judges in long fifty-kilometre walking competition: just one moments laps and athlete is not walking, he or she is running and thus disqualified.

This therefore could be true in a sense, but this not the only place where it is clearest to see in an instant if one wins or loses … high jump is one example. All supports event are designed to ensure that the best people take the medal, except for in cricket where there could be a draw as a final result.

The 100 metre race was my best event. I was the thid fastest in my school but when it came time to choose the person for the local schools sports day the fastest was out with a broken collar bone and the second fastest was away with mumps so it fell on me to take up the challenge. So although 3rd in the school I was the best on that particular day.
