During a grab bag with friends, I had to open up a gift in front of them, which embarrassed me a little. Ended up getting the one I brought. Once the group realized, they all felt bad and simultaneously went "Awww". Since the attention was all on me, I tried to back away from the group (and attention), and slightly lifted my shoulders and lowered my head. I quietly said it was ok that I got my own gift. Felt embarrassed from the attention and was blushing. Someone in the group stepped forward and traded gifts with me. The next day, he was talking to me (about something unrelated) and I was very soft-spoken while answering. He started smiling a lot when asking me to repeat myself.

Why did he start grinning?

It means that he can tell you want him.
Guys like girls. It sounds like you are a desirable one, and he can tell that you like, or choose him.
regaurdless of sex; a smile means that a human is happy, just like the waging of a tail means that a dog is happy.

maybe, if he's like me, he thought the reason you were so softspoken was because you were still embarrased and thought it was funny that you still were.
