Her OB can give her a BC pill that is safe to use while breastfeeding (my sister used it).

Well first off be sure not to have intercourse until after her 6 week check up. Next you need to decide how long until you want another baby. If you are thinking 2 years, you should have her look into Mirena or Para-gard. They are intrauterine contraceptives. Mirena uses hormones like a oral contraceptive and Para-gard uses copper. They can be removed anytime you decide you want to have another baby or they stay good for 5-10 years.

Talk to your doctor. The thing is I have friends who were breastfed and has a sibling that is 10 months younger. So, breastfeeding doesn't matter.
If it were me...I would probably take a oral contraceptive (there are ones out there that are safe when breastfeeding) and then have my husband use a condom as well.
Or use the only 100% effective form of Birth Control...abstinance.

Theoretically, if your wife breastfeeds whenever the baby wants and the baby is still waking up at night to nurse, she will not ovulate. But as soon as the baby starts sleeping through the night or getting solid food, you are no longer safe.
But just like any other method of birth control, it isn't fool proof.
You should both read Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. In my opinion, charting is the best form of birth control.

I have heard great things about Mirena have her talk to her OB. It is a lot safer than having an IUD. Those are nothing but a nightmare. Mirena is good for 5 years, it is in an implant form and can be inserted at the doctors office. I only wish it was around before I got my tubes tied. I would have gone for that instead!
Charting does work great as well, I did that between my 1st and 2nd. You & your wife really need to be in sync with her cycle.

I'm sure at your wifes next OB appt they will discuss her options, There are shots, patches, pills and cups that all would work, together they can choose one right for her. I'm sure that most doctors already have something in mind that is highly recommended. Good luck and congrats on the new baby!

Talk to the OB about this. Condoms have worked for me and my husband for 5 1/2 years with no problems.

I would have her look into an IUD at her next checkup with the obstetrician. It's a little device they put up into her cervical opening and prevents pregnancy for up to five years, and you can have it removed any time in between. Plus there aren't alot of hormones, and it's almost 100% accurate. Here's a link. Congrats on the baby!

Abstinence always works, but is impractical.
Best suggestion is to use multiple barrier methods....in other words, you use spermicidal condoms and she uses a diaphram with spermicidal creams. Not 100% efferctive but it's about the best you can do.
