Front wheel drive 318i? a rare beast indeed.

Did you manage to get the pump out of the fuel tank ok?

Messy old job, especially as the rear axle is in the way.

Sure its not the control relay thats failed.

If its an in tank pump, then unfortunate you will need to replace it. If its the fuel injection pump on the side of the engine, then its likely that the drive coupling from the engine has split. My advice would be to remove the pump from the mounting and inspect the coupling. Often if the coupling has split it can be as a result of wear and tear, however to make sure try to turn the fuel pump drive shaft with a vice grip just to make sure it is free turning.
Ja.

Firstly, it is possible for you to have purchased some watered down fuel, or fuel that was improperly winterized. If you did happen to get fuel with water in it, then it is possible for the pump to freeze up in cold weather. Make sure that your car's fuel tank vapor system is working properly. Take the car to a heated garage and wait for the car to warm up.. There are additives available to add to your tank that absorb moisture. If your pump really did freeze up, chances are that your fuel pump fuse will be blown.. Look in your fusebox. Also check your fuel filter. Fuel in FI cars are constantly cycled back and forth from the engine to the tank with 2 different lines. (not on one gas line like on a carburetted car). After a while, the contaminants from your tank will be trapped inside the filter, restricting flow. The usual symptoms are a refusal to accelerate, or reduction of speed on the highway. If it so happens that you did burn out your pump, you will find a servicing panel either under your back seat or under the carpetting in your luggage compartment. The pump can be removed and tested or changed without removal of the entire fuel tank. Also, you should service the fuel filter sock around your pump at this time (if there is one) Also, you can have your fuel lines blown through with high pressure air at a competent service garage. Good Luck!!!!

Well first of all it is not front wheel drive. Second how do you know the fuel pump is frozen or stuck. If it is a pump driven off a camshaft it cannot be stuck only broken - if it is electrical have you checked the wiring and the operation.

How does a pump appear to be frozen or stuck? It either works and you have fuel pressure or you have a problem with the fuse, relay, wiring or a bad pump. Mechanic time?

the pump wont be "frozen" as its submersed in fuel inside your fuel tank...and petrol dosent freeze...
