it isn't the tires and none of the rims apear to be overly warm.

Front or rear of car? front you could be smelling a belt burning. You could have brakes dragging also.

You may have sticking brake calipers. Brake fluid in all cars needs to be changed every two years, like it says in the owner's manual.. After this time, the fluid becomes toxic and acidic and can cause your caliper pistons to not fully release. Pads that are sticking can cause this odor. You should be able to sense improper heating of your brakes after a brisk run, by holding your hand out over the wheel, testing for excessive warmth. If you are determined, you can exercise your pistons "in" and "out" with a screwdriver. Good Luck!!!
