As many women should know, if you are on the pill and you miss some you may ovulate at anytime during that month. So your missed period may not be at the normal time to test for pregnancy so how long should someone wait to see if they are pregnant after actually having sex?

Also, I'm on the pill but I don't take them at exactly the same time everyday because of my schedule. My doctor also told me taking my antibiotics may mess with the effectiveness of the pill.

If you do not chart or monitor your fertility in any way, and you think you may have conceived, you should wait 19 days (or longer) after having sex to test. Why 19?! Sperm can live approximately 5 days in the proper environment; if the sperm managed to live until you popped an egg, the actual conception could have taken place several days after the sex act that got the sperm there. To make sure you're not testing too early, assume the sperm had very long lives (5 days is considered a very long sperm life) and that conception occurred then. Then allow 14 days for the embryo to implant and develop enough hCG to show up on a pregnancy test (96% of pregnant women will test positive by then.)

Well, if your period has not come by the expected date, you could still test on that date.

The luteal phase is the time between ovulation and the onset of your next period. this phase of time may be different for every woman. it could be 8, 10, 14 days long or even longer.

I suggest waiting 14 days after sex to test for pregnany. If the period has not arrived by then, a call tot he doctor should take place to see what is going on.

But unless you know how long your luteal phase is, the 14 days may be too long or too short though, this is just an estimate. if you're on the pill, you don't ovulate, there isnt any real way to gage how long this phase is.

i suggest also reading up on www.fertilityfriend.com to get more info on this issue.

good luck!

At least 10 - 12 days. The fertilized egg typically implants 5-10 days after ovulation, and that's when you'd begin producing hCG. I wouldn't expect a test to show positive for a few days after implantation.

14 days. Usually, the first day of your missed period. If you don't start your period, and the test in negative, wait a few days and test again. Do this for about a week, then if it's still negative and you still didnt start, go see the doctor about getting a blood test to check.

Good luck
