Will putting in a new battery that is more powerful (cold cranking amps) then the stock battery cause the starter solenoid contacts to burn? Even though the battery has more amperage available won't the starter just use the amount of amperage it requires to turn the motor and no more.

No it wont burn up anything. its only gonna use the volts required to start the car (12).

Your assumption is correct. The starter will only draw the current it needs, but the battery will be able to sustain that current for longer. This could make all the difference between the engine firing or not on a cold or wet day.

You can buy a battery with more cold cranking amps without hurting anything.
