I think it's an excuse for people to make money, now adays everything is just comercialized, our family send oneanother , love friendships and good-will cards to each others; and we all make small bites (hearts shapes chocolates and fruits cake) this is just a spanish tradition. And my husband give me some roses, or carnations since my birthday is on the February the 10th, 4 days before Valentines Day so i always got double gifts, so we celebrates love&friend'ship to all. take care peace out.

I celebrate love & friendship by making home made valentines with a group of my friends.
AND people do make money off of it.
I don't think the two are incompatible.
If I can keep the local craft supply store in business with my home made valentines, that's fine by me.

I usually buy a small chocolate piece from the good candy store for each person in my family, and I get my daughter something small like a mylar balloon or stuffed animal or book.
