I also had a mustang, so I feel your pain. First of all, your fuel costs are going to be enormous. Fuel is expensive in Chicago. If you are a careful driver and stop for rest, driving it up there should not cause any big problems. Fatigue and the boredom of driving can contribute to accidents. Tired and hungry drivers are not safe ones. But then again, your fuel costs are going to be high.

As for driving in the snow, you need snow tires. If you are not at all familiar with driving in snow and ice, you may want to pay a driving instructor for a couple of hours of this type of driving. I say this because I know someone who moved from California to New York and absolutely totaled his car when he hit a patch of ice. He had no idea how to control his car- he told me later he wished he had practiced a little with an instructor.

You may want to think about putting a sandbag in your trunk- I've done this with a small airplane once.

Be ready for a lot of wear and tear on your car- the weather will cause some problems you never had in Texas. Make sure your defrosters are working properly and that you have the equipment to get ice and snow off your vehicle- keep a dry pair of gloves in your car to help you with this task.

This is about all the advice I can give you as a driver in New York who has had more than his share of fun with snow and ice.

Good luck and safe driving.
Ken

You coming from Texas- Eh, thats a hard one. (Guessing you haven't had many horrible winters, if any)
Ive lived in the Midwest all of my life and Im used to the winters.
In 06- mind you, I'm kind of a grease monkey, I totaled my Camaro. I consider myself a great driver, well until then!
It takes learning, adjusting most importantly- patience while driving.
I think personally our winters in Chicago have been getting A LOT more milder.
If you can, I would suggest getting some sort of junker- either a SUV or a front wheel drive and breaking yourself into learning how to deal with winter in a Mustang.
Best of Luck!

It's as hard as most anything else. Four wheel drive vehicles are the best in the snow, but other then that, they are just about all equal. The one guy who suggested weight in the trunk is dead on good advice.

You will need some good tips on how to drive in the snow. The Secretary of States Driver License division can help you with a booklet.

Link below is for people new to driving in Illinois. Enjoy and welcome to Chicago.

Not personally but I know someone who has one and I also drive a RWD car. Do you have the V6 or V8? If the 8 it can be quite difficult, you will really tend to swing the rear end out alot, but it is manageable. But some bags of concrete in your trunk to add weight, and invest in some either winter or all season tires instead of the performance you may have on there now. Just take it slow because you will fishtail upon takeoff, but if you are smart only a little and then you will be fine.

It is hard to drive them any were you fine a lot of snow and bad road conditions. The Mustang was designed for clear open roads, not snow covered.

Driving in Chicago is horrible. You get used to it, but expect your car to get banged up.
