I remember my Mom taking me to a large store in Chicago with a man in uniform operating the elevator. But, the best part of the trip was the store we were in had like a monorail system on the ceiling for handling the money. The cashier would put your money in a little container, and it would follow a track all the way upstairs, and the upstairs cashier would give you the correct change and send it back down. That shopping trip was quite an experience!

Elevators operators have been used while working an elevator required some ability and risk-free practices education. Elevators at the instant are electronically controlled and in basic terms require a push of a button to function. There are exceptions as i think interior the Senate and abode you nevertheless have elevator operators because of the fact Senators and Representatives are too stupid to push a button.

Yes, I do . I remember, as a kid, taking the elevator at a major department store here in Montreal. They would tell you what floor we were arriving at and announce what was on each floor, and they did it in both English and French. They wore a nice uniform and were very polite. In Toronto at the CN Tower, an elevator operator accompanies the visitors and gives a brief history of the Tower, but it isn't as exciting and after one visit you don't need to hear it again.

Yes, when I was very little, they were still around in some places. Mostly elevators were already self-service by then though, and by the time I was in grade school I don't remember seeing any more manually operated elevators.

I dearly loved the personal elevator operator in the largest department store in our city. It was a joy and a pleasure to have him. He was always dressed so nicely and took pride in his job. He was a handsome African-American male and I was a young caucasian girl who enjoyed talking to him. It was not until years later that I even knew that during those years, a "white" girl was not supposed to speak to a person of color. What a horrible thing. I am so glad that times have changed. I often wonder what happened to our elevator operator.

I sure do.I went to a very well know hotel once.Got in the elevator and he closed the metal door, then the heavy wired one.You could see thru the wired one. When we took off and up,we took off.I got dizzy and nauseated. The funny part was that it was in a retirement complex, the elderly went up and down in it all the time.I was 20 and it made me sick.It was the Moody House in Galveston and it was beautiful.....I couldn't figure how the man could ride it all day...

Wasn't all that long ago (5 years?) that the Smith Tower in Seattle still had an operator. Once the highest building west of the Mississippi, it is now dwarfed by other buildings.

You are really going way back in time. But I do remember them. Another job replaced by automation. Do you remember dialing "0" and getting a real live operator? LOL

Yes I do. I was one for a day in a hotel in Miami. I took the temporary job for a day on my day off because I had a fear of elevators. I attack fears head on, or I did in those days. They were expecting a crowd because Billy Graham was staying at the hotel. I got to meet him and sneak him and his group out of the back of the hotel. He had his golf clubs. I had a great time that day. I will never forget it.
