My friend said Bettman created the shootout for an American audience that is uninterested in the sport. I personally don't like the shootout, but what do you think?

Being American AND Canadian, I guess my opinion is the most valuable. The shootout is retarded. Nothing is greater than watching overtime hockey- it is exciting, and doesn't last 3 rounds. Shootouts are just an excuse to end the game, but I personally believe that overtime is more entertaining than a game itself. That is why overtime is used in the playoffs- it is simply better than a shoot out, but in the regular season the TV companies just don't have time for a long overtime, and the shootout is a quick way to end the game.

Being Canadian & an avid hockey fan for most of my life, I do NOT like the shoot-out. All that is, is a glorified penalty shot.
There isn't anything wrong with ties. A team shouldn't get a point when losing in a shoot-out either. A win is a win, a loss is a loss. If you lose in a shoot-out, you've lost the game. Once O/T is over, and neither team has scored, that should be a tie..plain & simple. As for having a shoot-out in the playoffs...NO WAY. However, I would like to see the number of games in the playoffs reduced to best-of-five in the preliminaries, then best-of-seven for semi-finals and finals.
Nationality has nothing to do with opinion here. As for luring uninterested Americans, that seems ridiculous. Keep in mind, there are a LOT of American teams in the U.S.
I say get rid of the shoot-out. The novelty has worn off and it really doesn't solve a single thing.

No...don't like shootouts.
No team sport should ever be decided by a one-on-one situation. Shootouts actually hurt the overtime period because teams with decent shooters can play boring defensive hockey for five minutes then look to the shootout for the win.

My only problem with the shoot-out (and overtime) is that those games are worth three points. What I'd like to see is 3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an OT/SO win, 1 point for a OT/SO lose and zero points for a regulation lose.

As for Bettman creating the shoot out to lure in uninterested Americans it's not going to happen, uninterested Americas still have to sit though 65 minutes of a game that they aren't interested in to get to a shoot out.

No, I don't like the "crap shoot". Hockey is a team sport. I'd rather see hockey, not one guy going one-on-one against the goalie. It's gimmicky. Uninterested Americans aren't going to start watching hockey because of shootouts. Either people are fans or their not. Are game needs to be left alone.

Tons of Canadians like the shootout, many of whom play in the NHL today, and several of whom want the shootout in the playoffs.

Personally, I turn the channel because watching several players one after the other go on breakaways against a goalie is very reminiscent of practice.

Don't like it. Fine with the ties. Speaking to many Canadians, some like it and some don't. I think the purists/traditionalists are against it the most. Kids seem to like it.
I can live with it as long as it never sees the light of day in the play-offs. That there are 3 points awarded (especially a point for losing in the 5 min. OT) bothers me more than the shoot-out itself. I do think that some people who liked it at first are starting to sway, the novelty has worn off.
Bring back the ties.

i dont know if they do but i like it it is interesting to see how a certain player is going to shoot or who the coach is going to have shoot but its usually the same ones after a while always intense and its the tie braker so its always fun b/c if a regular season game had full ot like in the playoffs it could go all night and if they have a back to back game they would be extreamly tired the next night

It's alright. As long as it doesn't settle playoff games, I don't have too much beef with it.
