Ah...Adventure!!!!!
Good for you, you have flown the nest..
Four important things.
#1 Buy and install a battery operated smoke detector if there is not some sort of smoke detector in your apartment.
#2 Buy content insurance to ensure your property if some other apartment dweller has a fire and it ruins your stuff (smoke Damage)
#3 Pay your rent on time.
#4 Keep the apartment CLEAN.

Insist on a formal walk-through of the apartment before you move in--- you should take pictures if you can, but at the least a list of existing damages signed by both you and the landlord is a must; that way, when you move out, you'll have a much better chance of showing you didn't damage the property, and getting your security deposit back. Also the previous poster that recommended content insurance (aka renter's insurance) is very wise--- if there's a fire or robbery, the landlord is insured but only for the property, not for its contents. Without insurance, you could have a very hard time starting over if all your stuff goes up in flames.
Take the time to introduce yourself to your new neighbors. It's great to know your neighbors; they'll keep an eye out for you, everything from helping you tote your groceries in to picking up your mail when you're out of town. Make sure you do the same for them!

always keep the doors locked at all times. make sure you put your rent money up. Don't be afraid to ask for help when things get tight. only invite people who are closest to you to your home. The reason I say this, if you cannot go home to get away from drama or anything negative, then where can you go. Never "rent to own" furniture. Please save up and buy things in full. Check the locks, check for damages & report them before you move in (pictures are good). Test the smoke alarms too. Introduce yourself to a neighbor and find out about things you should look out for.
Have fun & good luck!

Well Ive lived in SEVERAL small places and our current apartment is awfully little. The first thing to do before you move your stuff in is check your closets for shelving, etc and install those things first so you will have a place to put your things when you do move in. That way you will start out organized and you won't have to feel like you are way cramped in.
Small spaces are really fun to decorate and stuff, but don't go too crazy too because chances are you won't be living there long term. Go second hand for more affordable decor etc.
Have fun! Good luck!

Check the apartment over very carefully and note ANY problem.
Your chances of getting your deposit back is slim to none.

Don't worry if it looks small, you'll get used to it.
Don't get a large pet.
