i was returning a top i bought before. The cashier made a mistake and gave me a refund for both things on the receipt that i showed her, not just the one item i returned. i didnt realize this mistake till after when i looked at the receipt. should i feel guilty that i didnt go back to the store and return the extra money?

It depends on how difficult it would be to go back to the store. Personally if I noticed it right away in the store I would point it out, but if I noticed it later when I was home I probably wouldn't bother with it unless the store was very nearby, or if I happened to be going there again in the near future.

You should return it. The cashier could get in a lot of trouble if the store managers think she took the money that she mistakenly gave you. You would want someone to do the same for you...

yes, you should. But the obvious remedy to assuage that guilt is to take the extra money and return it to the store with an explanation. It is the right thing to do and you will feel good about yourself.

I wouldn't go back. I figure that all of that kind of stuff evens out. Haven't you ever paid for something and then realized when you got home that it wasn't in the bag? Or bought something at the grocery store that was expired? Or otherwise gotten screwed out of money here and there? So this time it worked it your favor.

"Should" has nothing to do with it. Either you feel guilty or you don't. If you feel guilty, go back and fix things. If you don't, don't.

Personally, I'd do a rough estimate in my mind of how much my free time is worth and compare that to how long it would take me to return to the store and wait in their Customer Service line - and how much it would cost me in gas - and base my decision on that.

Hell no! It's the store's employees' responsibility to keep up with all transactions running smoothly. Anyway this happens during peak season often. Those clerks aren't paid enough to care, and if you return it now to do the 'right' thing, they're just gonna look at you like you're an idiot. It doesn't benefit them at all, just goes straight to the top CEO's. Live and learn.

Yes, go back to the store and explained what happened. That is the ONLY honest thing for you to do.

You drove to the store to return the top... they overpaid you... Ethically, I would call them, explain it to a manager and give them the option of coming to YOUR house to pick up the overpayment... If they decline, you have done your part. You are under no obligation to go to their store again to correct their error.

Yes. Think about it this way. Does it make you uncomfortable or do you have a guilty conscience. If so go and return it.

If you feel guilty, do it. If you dont, stores screw you over all the time, so return the favor.
