I thought that the new, low- energy bulbs were supposed to last longer but some of mine have 'blown' or' fused' (or whatever these bulbs do) after only a few weeks. The base of the tubes turn black and they have a 'burnt' smell. Have I just been unlucky or am I doing something wrong?

I have them in threes, in two rooms, they don't all burn out at once so it's not a power surge, the voltage is OK as they last for weeks.

jayktee9..ah, there is one room where it is a dimmer switch, the 'dimmer' hasn't worked for years it has only been used as an ordinary...on/off. Would this make a difference do you think? If so I'll have to change the switch.

I have fitted thousand of these lamps over the years, I can't say that I've EVER had an early failure. Are you using them with dimmer switches, if so that is what is causing the problem, there are currently only a couple of types suitable for use with standard dimmers. Where are you and what brand of lamps are they????

ADDED>> Because both dimmer and lamp have electronic circuitry, this is not compatible and can cause damage to either or both items. Best to fit an onn/off switch. This does not explain the other early failures, you may have bought a bad batch or they are simply poor quality. Try using branded lamps from Osram/GE/Philips/Sylvania etc.

If your light bulb is switched on by a dimmer switch this will most definitley effect the life of it. a low energy light bulb is effectivley a flurescent tube just alot smaller, and is not designed to be dimmed.
Try using reputable brands, or phoning the manufacturer help line to see what advice they can offer

I have heard the made in China brands are no good...Mine are doing great - GE. I use outside only - around the house and in my barn. The barn one has been on non-stop24/7 since April 07. I bought them because the regular bulbs kept going out every couple of months and they're supposedly cheaper in the long run. I have mainly reccessed lighting indoors and am thinking about trying some of the recessed type...

You must just be unlucky or got a batch that was made on a Monday or Friday. Anything mass produced is going to have a batch here and there that is bad, I started replacing my old style bulbs as they burnt out with the new ones. That was two years ago and I haven't had to replace a new one yet.

If you are unlucky - then so am I.

We have converted all our bulbs to the long-life, low power bulbs. I hate the light they give but at least it makes me feelI am doing the right thing - but like you they are all popping after a very short time (the longest one has lasted so far is 6 months)

I am seriously unimpressed.

The consumer magazine "Which?" did a report on these lamps a few months ago, they checked the life of the lamps and the reduction of light over a period.

Personally I would never use them as the light is such an awful colour.

They are not really environmentally friendly, as they do contain mercury, and need to be returned for disposal when they fail rather than being dropped into the trash.

Your bulbs are getting power surges somehow; this is definitely not normal. I've literally never had a compact fluorescent bulb burn out (although they do dim after a LONG time). I'd suggest getting an electrician to have a look at your wiring and grounding; something is amiss.
