I live in East Los Angeles, I've lived here my entire life so I'm used to the traffic and weather and everything. However, I've also lived in one house with my parents and sister for my entire life. I'm actually planning on moving out to North Los Angeles (namely Santa Clarita) but I was wondering how much it would cost to actually move out?

I'm looking into renting a one-bedroom apartment with two other people, I looked it up online and the rent prices range from $600-1300 a month. My parents say you would only need about $800 to move out, but I was surprised because I thought the total would be about several thousand.

So how much would it cost to move out into a one-bedroom apartment with two other people in North LA? I'm asking this as it counts for everything: gas prices, food, rent, bills, shopping, etc.

Actually, it depends on the landlord... some will let you move in even if you're not family or married.

Your parents may have lost touch with with the rental market. Your landlord will almost certainly require the first and last month's rent in advance, and possibly an additional security deposit. When you figure your utility costs, don't forget the telephone, cable (if television is important to you) and internet connectivity.

I don't know the LA region, but in general, the farther out you go, the cheaper prices get. You have to balance that against your transportation costs.

If you are looking at moving into a one bedroom and spliting the cost, you can only split the cost with on other person since the law states that you can have a max of 2 people in a one bedroom, 4 for a two bedroom and so on.

So with that said.. You would and your roommates will need to come up with 1st months rent and a security deposit of at least equal to one months rent... then your montnly cost of utilities, food, and any other esentials that you need to live.

$800 seems a little low. You might be looking at a min. of at least $2000.00 just to get settled. doing it on less might work but it won't get you into a nice place...

*******
It is not up to the landlord on how many people can occupy a unit. STATE LAW indicates that no more then 2 people per bedroom. Like I said a 1 bedroom only 2 people my live there. 2 bedroom 4 people and so on... If the state ever were to find out that more then occupancy limit is living in any one single unit the landlord will be facing a hefty fine......

Make sure that you have enough money for your rent for one month in the event that your roommates don't pay and you need to make up the difference. You also need to figure in a deposit for the place which is usually equal to a month of rent. For utilites it would be another $200. Also, cable, internet would be extra.
Your gas budget would depend on that you drive and how far and how often. Basically figure out what you use in a week or month and then multiply it by 1.5 to find what you would need in the even that prices continue to rise.
Like driving, food and shopping are relative to you. Just look at how much you have spend the last few monthes. You also want to have an extra $150 to setup your kitchen with things that you will need like sugar, salt, papertowels, butter... just the stuff that you need everyday.
And even if the apartment is furnished, you will still need dishes, towels, sheets.....
Good luck. Start saving your money.

It is always more then you think, if you split the costs for renting a 1100 place, they will most likely want security too, so the total to move in is 2200. Divide that by 3 = 800 approx. BUT, you have to have movers, boxes and supplies to pack your stuff / gas / food for your move in / utilities deposit depending on if you all will have to pay light and gas bill -- your total is now looking at around 1200 at the least ! Good luck on getting out of your folks house though.

well you need to make a list of all of your potential bills.

gas
food
rent
electricity
cable tv
cable internet
phone
trash pick up
entertainment
emergency fund
yourself

yes, i would have yourself be a bill. then you need to look up what each of those cost each month. depending on your income i would put aside 10% of possible for yourself. (make 500 a month, put aside 50 dollars a month in the bank) This doesnt include the emergency fund though...this is for your life savings.

Now there might be other things you need to pay for monthly, thats what I could think of. I would round things up (for example, say trash pick up is 30 a month, i have no idea what it is for sure, but I'd round it to 50.) You want to have enough money to be comfortable living, not work to live.

Also, most renters (at least here in the East) you will need first and last months deposit. So make sure you have that, plus first months bills set aside.

800 dollars could be rent for a one bedroom place, but you need money for other things as well.

A one-bedroom apartment for three people is really small! You should look for at the minimum a two-bedroom. Budget three times the montly rent--- so if a 2-bedroom goes for $1000, your share (one bedroom) is $500 so you'd need at least $1500. Add a couple hundred for utility company deposits and moving expenses just to be on the safe side.

Hate to break your heart, but take it from me, i used to live in california too, i lived in san diego, however the cost of living is pretty much the same throughought california, now, EAST LA...we know that thats not exactly "upper Middle Class" i have a friend who used to live in South Central and he sold his "SMALL HUMBLE HOME" and bought 2 HUGE HOUSES in texas. now ur ready to move out of ur parents house, thats great, im 20 and did the same however you need to take some things into concideration..

1) r u single?- being single and only having once income becomes harder to make it anywhere,
2)Its California- the cost of living is outragous(thats y i moved to texas) i just did a price check for santa clarita.....

http://www.losangelesgasprices.com/index.aspx?s=Y&fuel=A&area=Santa+Clarita&station=All+Stations&tme_limit=36

the gas is anywhere from $3.16-$3.30/gallon, and i dont know whether u drive a small car or truck..so the price of gas a month will differ, but this is still alot.

food-are u male or female? can u cook or not? these things can actually save u alot of money if your a bachelor who cant cook and eats at rallys or carls jr all the time, well that will have a major affect on ur wallet. if you actually cook your meals, (not microwave meals) and by things to make sandwiches, and live off of ramen, well maybe it might help a little.

Rent is crazy in california-if u want to get a small little apartment thats $600.00, most places you need to put a down payment of first and last rent so thats $1200, just on moving in

bills--- we cant live with cable, internet and extras in 2008 can we?? so remember its over 100.00 for cable package,

electricity depends on how u spend, water, trash might come included might not, all depends which apartment complex

now with all this said, and i dont know ur current employment status, so i can only say that stuff happends (believe me i know)... when i moved out i had a husband to help, and we moved into a 1 bedroom and we pay $429. our deposit was 900. including app. fee so yours will be much more expensive. i pay about $80.00 on gas a month, and i pay $2.79, and i have a small toyota not a gas eater at all.

bills well they will very, and u live in cali, MUCH HIGHER, so to be safe and u want to make it on your own call ahead to the elec. company, check how much dep. u will need to pay, im telling you if your rent is 600, you will need at least 2500 to be safe..thats so u can pay deposits, rents, cable, food, gas, all in the first month, and save some in case something happens at work. and always make double your rent, struggling is not fun at all, so if u make 1500 a month u should not have a problem at all, but just remember the first month is the hardest with all the connection installation deposit fees!...hope i helped, and GOOD LUCK TO U!

I don't know the zoning laws in Santa Clarita, but in most places 3 people who are unrelated by blood or marriage *can't* rent a one bedroom apartment.

It's illegal to deny housing based on marital status. I would save up a few thousand to cover utilities and home supplies.
