We've heard a lot about fear and what it can do, and how it's been related to courage. Plato said: "Courage is knowing what not to fear". From this, we can say that courage is knowledge, but what is it that we should not fear? What kind of knowledge brings courage?

Thanks for your comments!

Courage is doing something that needs to be done, although it frightens or alarms you. It has nothing to do with not being afraid.

Courage has nothing to do with knowledge. It is a symbol used to describe a type of action. Generally, it is used when action is taken in a direction culture sees as scary or an opinion is held that culture sees as true but vulnerable to attack. The one performing the action can not assign the value of 'courageous' as it is always viewed and then recounted later with that value attached.

It has no real meaning other than what a particular society/culture deems. Some cultures do not see certain action as courageous while others may. It is just a way to make one human organism seem better than another. It is false.

Courage is having the ability to do something despite whatever dangers you may face. Knowledge of one's fear brings courage because most people fear the unknown. If I know what I will be facing, won't I be more ready and willing to face it than if I don't know anything about it? But the knowledge depends on what you will be facing.

Some examples of courage:

"Expecting Adam," Martha Beck; profound and warm.

"Hope Rising," Kim Meeder, about the courage of children.

"When Invisible Children Sing," Huang, M.D. Likewise, and of a medical doctor's courage.

"Climb the Highest Mountain," Mark Prophet,
"Men in White Apparel," Ann Ree Colton, and
"The True Story of the Bilderberg Group," Daniel Estulin, http://www.danielestulin.com are examples giving knowing of what to and what not to fear, in the whole world, and even how to confront fear with Love.

Thanks for the great question and Plato quote. "It is easy to be brave from a distance."--Aesop. Combining the two: "It is wisdom to know when to run."

courage need not be something to go and do it,,
for instance, if someone cries, for whatever reason,, a courageous person will concole him and make him smile,,
but as jesus said, "sometimes the best thing to do is cry with the one who cry," as it takes more courage for the same!

i want to comment on plato's thought,
just knowing what not to fear, is not enough (even though i agree it's courageous), we should really not fear it in reality!
coz every one knows what not to fear,,(everyone knows smoking is bad for health,,but some do it),,so not only knowing it,,but executing it makes it a complete 'courage' thing to talk about!

you're welcome
^_^

It is the facing of some danger whether imaged or real that switches on the fear aspect in human makeup. Then to do the best you can to solve the dilemma, Sometimes you will be a hero and then sometimes a goat but the courage will not be denied.

My favorite explanation of courage is a quote atrributed to Ambrose Redmoon (whoever that is) :

"Courage is not the opposite of fear, but the realization that there is something more important than fear."

It's the best description I have yet heard.

To me courage is doing what is right- in face of what is popular or correct in the eyes of others. I guess it means standing up for what you really believe in- what brings this knowledge? experience and conviction.

hmmm....

for me "courage is facing any kind of fear"
knowing what not to fear, is a difficult task for me ;)

i think we should not fear from helplessness and surrender to fear itself, that we normally do unconsciously.

maybe knowledge about your weaknesses brings courage to face fear arising from such weaknesses...
:)
nice question :)
though i am confused at my answer :-o

Courage is being scared to death but still going ahead and doing it and not letting anyone see it in your face.
