In California the course is mandatory for anyone under the age of 18 for those over the age of 18 it costs $235.00 and it covers the a 4 day course, 2 days in a class room ,and then 2 days out on the course with a 125cc or a 250cc motorcycle, the things you need to have with you on the course is a dot approved helmet, gloves ,boots that cover the ankle, and a long sleeved shirt or jacket . I went thru the course last yr it is well worth every cent you'll spend on it and definitely go thru the course if you are going to start riding on the street .

Again, check with your local DMV.
Footnote: A while back the people at the national Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) really did a disservice to themselves and the rest of the nation by failing to update their curriculum in anything like a timing manner and at the same time delving off into the realm of politics and legislative lobbying in manner that offended and alienated large sectors of the motorcycling community. The result was a number of formerly MSF affiliated programs and States that have broke away from MSF and created their own independently training programs. Oregon's TEAM OREGON rider education program is but one example of this. And Oregon has done an excellent job of developing their own program.
I mention this only to let you know that the training available in your area may not be an MSF program.
But! Defintiely - Take the class! :-)

i'm attempting to get a experience on your question. If i comprehend it proper. i might say by not lots, the two. although, i think that they are assisting others. Or a minimum of, giving the novices a raffle, who don't have or have not offered a bike as of yet to relatively holiday a bike and to artwork in the direction of using it thoroughly. case in point, a chum of mine had taken the course this previous weekend. He did not previous the course through his coping with of the bike and attempting to maintain up with the course training. He grew to become into not happy approximately not getting his waiver. yet, he instructed me that he's happy that he has taken the course. He have been given some holiday time in on a easily motorcycle and how it operates. and how the course textile pertains to creating him a greater useful rider. yet, he hated the motorcycles getting used that he had issues working the rear brake and kit shift and he have been given leg cramps day after in the present day. additionally, he wanted that MSF had cover the "Operator's instruction manual" for the motorcycles being use in lecture room time. I asked him if he would be ending his classification in some unspecified time interior the destiny. He instructed me; sure, the course had shown him what issues he had. With greater prepare, he can get greater useful. He somewhat prepare, retake the type (If and while)than to undertaking out on the main street due the somebody else a million/2-A** coaching and crashing. besides, the DMV attempt and MSF Waiver is each physique option to take the two one. inspite of each thing, we are all novices in the initiating. BTW: My State would not enable riders to prepare interior the sorting out area. And its not a solid or clever concept to do it. It kinda contradict your assertion. the ordinary way and the complicated way.

MSF Motorcycle courses are usually offered through community colleges or bike shops. I've noticed a lot of the Harley shops offer the classes. I took the beginner class last spring, and HIGHLY recommend it!
