"Better" can be subjective. If we are looking strickly at records, then you have to say the Yankees. If you are looking at other things like loyal fans in bad times (and good), better than average front office, team cammeraderie and community service, I think you can give the edge to the Red Sox. Much of the modern success for the Yankees has to do with deep pockets and ability to out-spend many other teams. Steinbrenner has "bought" a number of World Series victories but it still doesn't mean they are the best team.

The best team is and will always be the New York Yankees. Nothing the Red Sox do will ever be good enough. The Red Sox can win every World Series, Division Title and AL Pennant for the next ten years and they'd still be a long way off from the Yankees plateau. The Yankees accomplishments are unparalleled.

Why do you do this to people, it makes no sense.
Even if you were more specific, Yankee fans would say the Yankees and Red Sox fans would say the Red Sox.
Fans of teams other than those two will wonder why you aren't mentioning teams other than the Red Sox and Yankees.
And, as posted, you aren't being very specific.
Certainly, historically, the Yankees are the best baseball team in history.
No one can argue, do to the fact that they won the world series that the Red Sox was the best team in 07.
Also, as pointed out, both teams would struggle if there was an actual salary cap.
Eg, for fans of both the Red Sox and the Yankees, if your payroll was $80 mil a year, which players would you keep and which would you not have signed.
Awfully hard question.

They're both very good teams. I'm a Red Sox fan, so naturally I'd go with them, however I think you could argue either the Red Sox or the Yankees as being the best team. There's no right answer to this question in my opinion. Both teams have their strengths and weaknesses...but usually deliver quite well as a team!

Do you mean historically or who will have the best team this year? I am a Red Sox fan but the Yankees have dominated baseball history with the most championships.
Over the past few years the Red Sox have been better. I think the Sox have a better team (great pitching, same great line up) going into next year but the Yankees will, as always, be a serious threat.

The RED SOX. they are the more complete team with better pitching, bullpen & bench players. The hitting may be better overall with the Yankees last year but it's pitching that wins championships. The Yankee hitters are all older as they have the oldest starting 9 in the AL and the RED SOX keep adding younger guys to the line up so the hitting looks up for grabs too. Between the 2 the RED SOX are clearly the better team, look at the numbers at the end of the 2007 season, there's really no way to dispute that.
To anyone who claims those tainted 26* titles have any bearing on how good the Yankees are now just shows how little you know about baseball.

Yankees are one of the best teams in history, however with the largest player payroll they should never lose. When you can go out and buy all the best players you are supposed to win.
Red Sox have been one of the worst teams in history, but that has changed over the past several years, mostly because they have started spending large amounts of money on player salaries also.
Who is better now? I'd have to go with the Red Sox, two major reasons for this...
1. They are the defending champions.
2. They have a much better pitching staff.

The Yankees, because I'm a Yankees fan and that is all I need. If the Yankees were 0 for the season, I'd still think the Yankees were the better team. We'll not really, but you know what I mean.

Well if you're talking about the past and present, you would have to go with the Yankees because they have won more titles and are a franchise that most people non-MLB fans would recognize out of all the teams. But, if you're talking about the present, definitley the BoSox because their rotation is a step ahead of the Yanks, their offense is at the same level with theirs and they have more leadership around the clubhouse. So, with all of that said, the Red Sox. I am a Boston fan and always will be so I am not picking the Spankmees. Also I like how Noah H.'s picture has a clown nose.
