That would depend on how badly fragmented your drive is and what tool you are using, the general opinion is that the more regularly you run this maintenance task, the lesser it takes each time. Its also true that some of the third party tools do a much faster and thorough job than the built in tool. Just like it takes much longer to sort out a messy closet when the junk has piled up, if the drive is badly fragmented or piled with junk, it can take anything from a couple of hours to much longer. Try and run a disk cleanup before you start. Personally, i'd recommend you download one of the trial versions of any third party tool as the Vista built in program does not offer any fragmentation graph.

You should run this - or check if it needs running about once every 6 weeks or so, (depends what you do). It takes a while, maybe 20 mins or so, but you can leave it to run in the back ground.

It all depends on exactly how fragmented your disk is. If you haven't defragmented in years, it may take up to a full day, maybe more.It also depends on the speed of your CPU, amount of RAM, and the amount HD space you have left.

properly first of all 446mb of ram is a few distance too little to run vista you desire 2gb ram minimum to run vista efficiently enormously on a working laptop or pc. so 8 hrs does not sound undesirable in view that your pc is overloaded like loopy. and that i've got been working vista because of the fact it grow to be in beta sorting out and that i've got in no way discovered besides to view the colour chart that's truthfully a reliable component in view that exhibiting which will basically reason it to take longer.

Yes, everyone is telling you the truth - except, I never heard of "ASHAMPOO".

I have two very large HD's, and it takes almost 4 hours to defrag my drives. It just depends on how big, how much info, and how fast the computer runs.

probably will take 1-2 hours, depending on your disk size. vista may make things slower since its a massive operating system.
